{"id":7176,"date":"2018-05-21T08:39:57","date_gmt":"2018-05-21T06:39:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bonninsanso.com\/discoverymenorca\/?p=7176"},"modified":"2018-05-21T10:28:41","modified_gmt":"2018-05-21T08:28:41","slug":"wild-orchids-the-surprise-of-the-menorcan-woods","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bonninsanso.com\/discoverymenorca\/wild-orchids-the-surprise-of-the-menorcan-woods\/","title":{"rendered":"Wild orchids \u2013 the surprise of the menorcan woods"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For a small island, <strong>Menorca has a very rich wealth of flora<\/strong> including <strong>more than 1,200 different species<\/strong>.\u00a0 Precisely because it is an island, the species have evolved differently to the mainland of Spain and our plants and flowers are <strong>endemic<\/strong> to the island.\u00a0 In our walks through the Menorcan woods we find pines, wild olive trees and also the beautiful wild orchids.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7169\" style=\"width: 1144px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7169\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-7169 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bonninsanso.com\/discoverymenorca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Ophrys-tenthredinifera-Bonnin.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1134\" height=\"1062\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-7169\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Red Bee<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The <strong>respect for these orchids<\/strong> come not only from the naturalists themselves who today continue to study their form and above all their pollination, but also worldwide. Perhaps we are more accustomed to<strong> finding them<\/strong> in the florist\u2019s shops than the <strong>Menorcan countryside<\/strong> but it is one of the wonders of Spring on our island each year and if we are lucky and we look hard <strong>thirty different orchids can be found<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7170\" style=\"width: 1144px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7170\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-7170\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bonninsanso.com\/discoverymenorca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Ophrys-speculum-Bonnin.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1134\" height=\"702\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-7170\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mirror of Venus<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The<strong> most common two orchids<\/strong> are the Red Bee, known on the island as the Red Fly (Ophrys tenthredinifera) and the Mirror of Venus or Blue Fly (Ophrys speculum).\u00a0 Both of these are of the genus Ophrys whose flowers resemble the bodies of bumblebee<strong>s<\/strong> and other fly like insects.\u00a0The <strong>flowers produce aromatic substances<\/strong> which attract male insects.\u00a0 The most universal botanist of all time, <strong>Charles Darwin, devoted an entire book to the study of pollination of orchids<\/strong> which is still in use today in most
