{"id":8771,"date":"2019-11-27T13:07:36","date_gmt":"2019-11-27T12:07:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bonninsanso.com\/discoverymenorca\/?p=8771"},"modified":"2019-11-27T13:07:36","modified_gmt":"2019-11-27T12:07:36","slug":"mushrooms-of-menorca-ii","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bonninsanso.com\/discoverymenorca\/mushrooms-of-menorca-ii\/","title":{"rendered":"Mushrooms of Menorca II"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bonninsanso.com\/discoverymenorca\/do-you-know-the-mushrooms-of-menorca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><em>After the success of the blog about mushrooms in Menorca<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, we thought we\u2019d write about a few more species that can be found on our island.<\/p>\n<p>These <strong>won\u2019t be the best known but are still edible<\/strong> and some of them have a high culinary value.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8764\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bonninsanso.com\/discoverymenorca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Pleurotus_eryngii.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"430\" \/><strong>GIRGOLA DE CAMP (<em>Pleurotus eryngii<\/em>) King Oyster Mushroom<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In Castilian they are called \u201cseta de cardo\u201d (thistle mushroom) and are favourites in the kitchen as well as having medicinal properties.\u00a0 They have a brown convex cap which, when old, becomes flat and concave.\u00a0 The gills and stalk are white.\u00a0 The flesh is white and has a strong smell and taste.\u00a0 It can be found in open countryside, in fields near thistles.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8765\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bonninsanso.com\/discoverymenorca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Chroogomphus_rutilus_Bryonia_orig.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"467\" \/><strong>CAMA DE PERDIU (<em>Chroogomphus rutilus<\/em>) Pine Spike Cap<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In Castilian it is called \u201cgonfidio reluciente\u201d.\u00a0 It has a brown to brick red bell shaped cap which flattens with age and is very slimy when wet.\u00a0 The gills are straw-coloured.\u00a0 It is found in pine forests.\u00a0 Not greatly appreciated in the kitchen, perhaps because it turns mauve when cooked which makes it unpleasant looking.\u00a0 Some cooks dry them because they like their chewing gum texture and they are ideal for people who don\u2019t like a strong flavour.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8766\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bonninsanso.com\/discoverymenorca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Hydnum_albidum.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><strong>PICORNELL BLAND (<em>Hydnum albidum)<\/em> White Hedgehog<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is a completely white mushroom, but if the soil is very dry, it could have some yellowish spots. It has an irregular shaped cap.\u00a0 In Catalonia it is called \u201clengua de buey blanco\u201d (white ox tongue) because the underside has a mass of small vertical spines similar to this animal\u2019s tongue. It can be found in mixed forests. Within this group of fungi, this is the most appreciated.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8767\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bonninsanso.com\/discoverymenorca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Russula-delica.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"581\" \/><strong>BOLET BLANC (<em>Russula delica)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In Castilian it is called \u00abr\u00fasula blanca\u00bb (white Russula). It is a large white mushroom whose cap becomes funnel-shaped with brown spots with age. The stalk is short and round.\u00a0 The flesh is thick and spicy and it is better to eat specimens that are young and tender.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8768\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bonninsanso.com\/discoverymenorca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Russula_grisea.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><strong>BLAVA (<em>Russula grisea<\/em>)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is from the same species as the \u00abbolet blanc\u00bb and they are very similar. They can be distinguished by their colour, which is greenish, greyish and blue. The stalk and gills are white.\u00a0 It is more appreciated in the kitchen and is sometimes known as \u00abthe mushroom of the pigs\u00bb.
