Talayotic Menorca has a very important nucleus in Cales Coves, with more than a hundred burial caves but today we <strong>are stopping at the necropolis of Cala Morell, one of the most spectacular in the north of the island.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>It is situated<\/strong> in the urbanisation of Cala Morell, on the north coast in the municipality of Ciutadella.\u00a0 On reaching the urbanisation, turn left towards the beach and leave your vehicle in the designated car park.\u00a0 There are information panels and access is free throughout the year.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8804\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bonninsanso.com\/discoverymenorca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Cala_Morell_necropolis_cave_14_4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/>The necropolis includes a group of <strong>fourteen numbered artificial caves<\/strong> that were burial sites from the Initial Bronze age to the Roman era (II Century AD).\u00a0 The oldest caves are numbered 11 and 12 and are small and oval shaped.\u00a0 The other caves are much larger, some with columns inside imitating the circular houses of the Talayotic era.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8802\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8802\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-8802 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bonninsanso.com\/discoverymenorca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Cala_Morell_12_vella.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-8802\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">cave number 12<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As we can see, some are simply built, others have slopes and columns cut into the rock to mark different areas and some even have small front yards.\u00a0 The <strong>most spectacular cave of all, number 4,<\/strong> has classic architectural motifs on the fa\u00e7ade, copying Etruscan cornices and also Punic funeral stelas.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8803\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8803\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-8803 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bonninsanso.com\/discoverymenorca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Cala_Morell_necropolis_cave_4_3.jpg\" alt=\"Cueva 4\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-8803\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">cave number 4<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The site has had <strong>four archaeological digs in the last few decades,<\/strong> the most recent of them in 2007.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Necropolises were places to bury the dead in pre-Christian cultures or villages.
