{"id":8869,"date":"2019-12-11T15:16:24","date_gmt":"2019-12-11T14:16:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bonninsanso.com\/discoverymenorca\/?p=8869"},"modified":"2019-12-11T18:51:53","modified_gmt":"2019-12-11T17:51:53","slug":"els-pastorells-the-shepherds-christmas-theatre","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bonninsanso.com\/discoverymenorca\/els-pastorells-the-shepherds-christmas-theatre\/","title":{"rendered":"Els Pastorells (the Shepherds), Christmas Theatre"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Among the Christmas customs that have carried on for generations, religious theatre is prominent with the <strong>children\u2019s version of angels, imps and shepherds.<\/strong>\u00a0Each Christmas there is a production of \u201cEls Pastorells\u201d in various theatres on the island to see the birth of Jesus and the adoration of the shepherds (hence the name \u201cpastorells\u201d).\u00a0 It is a tradition not to be missed.\u00a0 It is clearly of a religious and medieval origin although it didn\u2019t appear in the c<strong>hildren\u2019s theatre in Menorca until the late 19<sup>th<\/sup> and early 20<sup>th<\/sup> centuries<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8864\" style=\"width: 1010px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8864\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-8864 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bonninsanso.com\/discoverymenorca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/pastorells-mao_MD.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"563\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-8864\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pastorells Ma\u00f3. Menorca al d\u00eda<\/p><\/div>\n<p>There have been many productions over the years.<strong>\u00a0 Some have been passed from hand to hand anonymously but many have known authors.\u00a0<\/strong> The oldest productions are more religious but, over time, more irreverent topics were introduced in order to entertain the public and various aspects of everyday life were put into a comic format.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8865\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8865\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-8865 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bonninsanso.com\/discoverymenorca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/pastorets-ciutadella_DM.jpg\" alt=\"Pastorets Ciutadella. Diari Menorca<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>The strange thing is that not all the island has the same production of \u201cEls Pastorells\u201d<\/strong>.\u00a0 In Mahon, Es Castell, Sant Lluis and Es Mercadal there is a version which comes from the \u201cComedy of the Pastorells\u201d of 1870 written by the parish priest Roc Coll.\u00a0 Since 2011 a version by the author Ferrer Magi has been produced in the education centre of La Salle de Alaior.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8866\" style=\"width: 751px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8866\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-8866 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bonninsanso.com\/discoverymenorca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/pastorells-es-castell.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"741\" height=\"603\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-8866\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pastorells Es Castell. Diari Menorca<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Ciutadella, for its part, is the municipality whose productions have maintained a greater drive<\/strong>.\u00a0 The Catechetical Centre of Sant Miquel has staged \u201cEls Pastorets\u201d every year since the mid 40s.\u00a0 Written by Josep Maria Folch i Torres, Rosend Llates or Bato i Borrego and an unknown author.\u00a0 In the early 60s Jaume Anglada wrote \u201cLlum del cel\u201d (Light of the Sky) which was performed until the early 70s when old texts were revived.\u00a0 In 2004 the theatre director, Maria Genestar, produced a version along the lines of the nativity story but based in the 1960s with a couple called Jose and Maria from Ciutadella.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Among the Christmas customs that have carried on
