Menorca is a land of cheeses but also of wines. Binifadet in Sant Lluis, Binitord and Sa Marjaleta in Ciutadella, Bodegas Menorquinas in Es Mercadal, Hort de Sant Patrici in Ferreries, Sa Cudia and Son Cremat in Mahón, Sa Forana in Sant Climent and more recently, Torralbenc also in San Climent, are the nine producers which are currently making wine on our island. Vi de la Terra Illa de Menorca is the guarantee mark that refers to the wines identified as coming from Menorcan whose total vineyard area is 41.15 hectares.
The Minorcan vineyard has gone from producing 424.6 hectoliters with just four wineries, to 1,544.48 with nine wineries in just over a decade. A production that has increased by 264 percent and that has multiplied almost four throughout this period. The number of wineries has not grown in the same proportion but has doubled and almost every two years, has added a new maker to reach the current nine.
Wines are made with the white varieties Chardonnay, Macabeo, Malvasía, Moscatel de Alejandría, Parellada and Moll, and with the red varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Monastrell, Syrah and Tempranillo. If we look at the detail, the variety that grows the most is the white wine that occupies 56 percent of the planted area. A good bet for the makers of these cold wines that are consumed above all, in summer when there is more tourism on the island. Next time, ask for wine from Menorca.
