Winter weekend in Menorca

Perhaps it’s unusual to think of Menorca in winter, above all when its beaches are famous the world over during summer. However, spending a weekend on the green and blue island of the Balearics could be a haven of peace and quiet. Saturday morning is a good time to discover the cities of Maó or Ciutadella and visit the local fish and meat markets which are full of flavours and Mediterranean colour. It’s very tempting to have a glass of vermouth at one of the stands in the Mercat des Peixin in Maó or the Mercat de Ciutadella. After eating in one of the portside restaurants, we advise going to Punta Nati, Santandria, the Lighthouse of Artruxor anywhere on the west coast in order to take in a wonderful sunset.

Faros de Menorca

The Teatre Principal of Mahón, the oldest opera house in Spain, regularly programmes a play or a concert and we recommend you visit it because music and Menorca have a very special relationship. Or if you prefer it’s always nice to end the day with a drink in the famous bar EsCau de Cala Corb, in Es Castell, listening to songs that the locals sing live. Sometimes someone might just pick up the guitar and sing with their heart in their hands.

An excellent option for Sunday morning would be to go for a walk on the Camí de Cavalls path, which we have spoken about before, or if you prefer armchair sport, go at 11.30 to the Hippodrome of Mahón to see a trotting race, horse races at trotting speed with a cart attached, an unforgettable experience.

An afternoon visit could include the visit to a coastal village such as Fornells, BinibecaVell and take a locally-grown camomile tea in a café and just sit back and enjoy the Island of Calm. If the Tramontana wind is blowing, you can enjoy the wind in Menorca.
