When the holidays are over, we also have our own return to the allotment and must plan the crop for autumn and winter. After the vegetables we have grown during the summer have absorbed nutrients, above all the solanaceae, we must add fertilisers.

If you remember, the first time we spoke about the urban allotment, we mentioned the care of the substratum and recommended some fertilisers. As well as these, we could also add vermicompost, green fertilisers or plant legumes, such as beans, which provide the soil with nitrogen.

Don’t forget that before eating all the things that we have grown on our allotment during July and August, we can keep some tomato or pepper seeds if we want to be fully self-sufficient. We cannot wait for the plants to dry in the earth because we won’t have time to prepare it as we mentioned before.

September is a changeable month because it can still be very hot but alternating with cooler days and nights. Luckily, in Menorca we still have the privilege of a mild climate and the threat of severe cold that might affect our urban crop will not come until after October when we should be on guard.

September is a good time to sow lettuces, radishes, endives or turnips. It is also a good time to transplant lettuces, cabbages and cauliflowers. And now that the children are back at school and learning new things, it might also be a good time to show them how to care for our small allotment and encourage them to help us.
