Camí de Cavalls: from Cala en Turqueta to Cala Galdana

Once the summer season is over and temperatures are lower, the urge returns to walk along the Camí de Cavalls and to discover our island. The section that we describe today runs along the most famous beaches on the south coast of Menorca. These are probably the most frequently photographed and the most visited by tourists: Turqueta, Macarella and Galdana. The main feature of this part of the Cami is that it passes through three ravines that vertically cut through the central part of the island.  With the camera ready from the start, we begin at Cala en Turqueta and walk along the path to the left of the beach, with a gentle ascent that lasts about 1.5 kilometers. The path descends near Cala Macarelleta and then rises to allow a better view of the famous Cala Macarella. Behind the beach there is a wetland area, which is where the Macarella ravine finishes.

Cala Macarella

So far we will have covered almost half of this walk. When leaving the beach, we will climb the steepest part of the path for about 50 meters. The road becomes flat passing between Es Bèrecs de Santa Anna, a low landscape of heather and rosemary and then descends very gently until reaching Cala Galdana. The Camí de Cavalls  goes through the west side of the Torrente de Cala Galdana. This is the stream that descends through the mythical Barranco de Algendar, the largest in Menorca. The road continues ,crossing the stream by a bridge, passes the edge of the white sand beach and climbs the cliff between the urbanisation.  In this section, the vegetation varies depending on whether we are between the gullies, in the ravines or in the flat areas. On the coast we will find, much as in other coastal areas, Limonium or marine fennel growing. Further inland, we will find low level landscape of heather and rosemary. Within the ravines we will find more humid areas protected from the wind, with holm oaks.
