They say it’s never too late to learn a new language. Menorca is a paradisiacal island that sails around the Mediterranean and each year, is visited by thousands of tourists from all over the world. Some of them fall head over heels in love with it that they buy a house in order to enjoy its quality of life all year round. We are, then, a cosmopolitan and international island in which knowing languages is important to make friends but also to be able to provide a good service.

There are two official language schools (EOI) on the island: one is in Ciutadella and the other in Mahón. They give classes in Catalan, English, French, German, Italian and Russian. The courses range from beginners to advanced levels in the different languages. Enrolment is open until the end of September and depending on the number of registrations, the different groups are formed. After passing the exams, official qualifications are awarded which accredit the command of the language and enable the student to move up to the next level.

You should also be aware that the adult education centres in both Ciutadella and Mahón also give classes in Catalan and Spanish, aimed specifically at foreigners, as well as German, English, French and Italian.

They also supplement this offer with private schools for children aged between two and three as well as for adults, and there are conversation or exchange groups that meet frequently. It is a more relaxing way to learn, practice and not forget a language, as well as an easy way to make new friends. They usually meet up in busy cafés in the city centre. Here are three if you are curious to try: In Ciutadella the Casino 17 de Gener and in Mahón, Cafè Nou and the Mademoiselle Plumecrêperie.
